HOW IT BEGAN.
Our Society began in the mid-1980s, brought together by a shared passion for Gibraltar’s past and a deep desire to help protect it. The Society officially took shape in 1985 and was inaugurated a year later. It then grew quickly into a network of enthusiastic supporters across the UK and Gibraltar.
Building a community
Since our founding, the Friends of Gibraltar Heritage Society has funded and helped numerous restoration projects, community initiatives, and historical publications. We are proud to have lent a hand in everything from military fortifications and supporting archaeological research to working with local bodies like the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.

Education is central to the preservation of Gibraltar’s heritage. That’s why we provide annual lectures, study visits, and publications, allowing members and enthusiasts to engage with Gibraltar’s past in new and exciting ways. Our aim is to build and nurture an understanding of the Rock’s remarkable story and the vital importance of preserving it.

A HISTORY LIKE NO OTHER
For centuries, Gibraltar has been a crossroads of cultures, empires, and peoples, giving it a history that is entirely unique. Recognising the crucial need to preserve and shine a light on this legacy, our founding members set out to raise awareness, empower research, and provide support for heritage conservation.
