Protecting the past &
inspiring the future.
The aim of the Friends of Gibraltar Heritage Society is simple: to protect, promote, and shine a light on Gibraltar’s incredible heritage. We believe that history is about understanding the past and letting it inspire who we are today, informing generations to come.
Through our work in conservation, education, public engagement, and more, we help to ensure that Gibraltar’s rich story continues to be told. Whether it’s through restoring historic sites or supporting students, veterans, and grassroots initiatives, every project shares the aim of celebrating the Rock’s amazing heritage.
PRESERVING HISTORY
Heritage projects
Since the early 1990s, we’ve supported more than 60 heritage projects, from major restoration efforts at Lord Airey’s Battery and Witham’s Cemetery to digital archives and commemorative installations. These projects not only conserve physical landmarks but also protect the stories and identities tied to them. From funding conservation at Trafalgar Cemetery to launching the Gibraltar Heritage Journal, we strive to champion Gibraltar’s history in ways that endure.

REACHING OUT
Engagement
We believe that heritage should be shared as well as preserved. That’s why engagement is so important to what we do. You can find us at history festivals like Chalke Valley and Gosport or at commemorative events at the Rock itself, bringing people together through a shared love of Gibraltar. This has enabled us to work with amazing partners, veterans, artists, and community members to build connections between people and places.

SHINING A LIGHT
Education
Education is another cornerstone of our aim. We fund postgraduate bursaries at the University of Gibraltar, award school prizes, and support education partnerships in Gibraltar and abroad. By doing this, we aim to spark curiosity, support research, and inspire the next generation of heritage champions. We also host talks, seminars, and publish the peer-reviewed Gibraltar Heritage Journal.

SUPPORTING PROJECTS
Grants
Our grants programme empowers individuals, charities, and organisations to bring their heritage projects to life. This might mean restoring historic landmarks, running school programmes, or helping to create engaging visitor experiences; our funding helps turn ideas into impact. If you have a project that supports Gibraltar’s history, we’d love to hear from you.
